Book Lacewood: A haunting love story that sweeps across centuries: Romantic Small Town Southern Fiction Review :

I am a big fan of Jessica James, both her historical and contemporary fiction works, most of which I have read. In Lacewood, we are treated to both genres in one book. I always find Jessica’s writing very compelling; her prose is so rich and descriptive it is very easy to become immersed in her stories Telling not showing is a pet peeve of mine in a book, but this is never a problem in any of the books I have read by this author. In this book, there are two stories set one hundred and fifty years apart; one a contemporary tale, the other set during the Civil War. There is an air of mystery as the pasts and interconnection of the contemporary and historic characters are gradually revealed. I also found the historic story haunting; not just because of the references to apparitions and feelings of a presence in some of the rooms of Lacewood, but also because it touched so many of my emotions; it is a story that I will be thinking about for some time to come - one of my definitions of a good book. Lacewood, a dilapidated mansion, is almost a character, too. As the contemporary main characters Kate and Will gradually restore the home to its former state, Jessica uses letters to tell part of the historic story. I say part because we only read the letters of one of the main characters, Jonathan, and some of those are missing from the sequence. In Part II of the book, which begins fairly late in the book, we read the full story of Annie and Jonathan. I know not everyone likes the use of letters to tell a story, but I find the plot device very effective. When I began Part II I wondered if it would seem repetitive, but that was not the case at all as the gaps in Jonathan and Annie’s story emerged and these characters, and a few others, became fully developed. This is a beautiful love story, but so much more than that. The book also addresses the cost of war, both physical and emotional, and the sacrifices made by the soldiers and their families. As with Jessica’s other Civil War books, we see that there were honorable, heroic people on both sides. Set again in Virginia, we are also reminded how close to the horror of battle many civilians lived during that war.
